What's New at RMSS 2010
Our Own Land -- No More National Forest Service
RMSS provides a safe, fun and educational event for all. Over the last 20 years we have been using the Pikes Peak National Forest for our event and it has come time to move on.
The year 2009 was the first year to hold RMSS on 35 acres of private land just north of
Gardner, CO, located about half-way between Westcliffe and Walsenburg Colorado on Highway 69. The property is 5 miles off of Highway 69 with almost NO traffic of ANY kind, and offers incredibly black skies.
The new land received RAVE reviews from all who attended! Wonderfully dark skies, very little light dome from the big cities to the north, and beautiful Rocky Mountain Scenery!
We will still be accepting Land Fund Donations this year in order to satisfy our debts as well as plan for
future improvements. We thank all who have donated in the past and those who are considering
donating in the future.
Confirmed New Items:
Photo Contest
Unofficially in the past we have had a bug photo contest, seeking the best bug photo. This year we would like to officially create a photo contest.
This will include three categories: 1) Best Bug Photo, 2) Best photo on the ground and could include people places and events, and 3) best photo in the sky, and might include day or night sky photos, silhouettes or astro photography. First time photographers will be given special consideration too.
The catch? It must be taken from the RMSS 2010 site within the period of RMSS 2010. Submittal info will be available at the registration tent during the event. We will get them transferred to a computer and judge them prior to the awards ceremony.
Submissions will also be posted throughout the year in the Hypoxic Observer.
Good luck!
